Creating the Wreath Base
If you are using a plain green wreath, feel free to skip ahead to the spray painting section.
If you can’t find a plain green wreath in stock anywhere like me, then you can improvise like I did!
I used a wreath form that I already had and bought 2- 9′ long pieces of greenery for just a few dollars each at Michaels.
The greenery comes flat and packed down, so use your fingers to pull apart all the wired pieces.
Fluff up the greenery so it looks nice and full and the greenery is going in all directions.
Wrap one of the wired ends around your wreath form so it’s nice and secure.
Start wrapping the greenery around the wire wreath frame so you’re wrapping across the wires.
Make sure the greenery is nice and tight, and that you aren’t leaving any gaps in between.
Once you finish wrapping, secure the wire end in place with either wire or hot glue.
Painting the Wreath Green
To make the wreath look a bit more Grinchy, I sprayed a few light coats of a bright green Grinch-colored spray paint on my wreath.
Make sure to put something down under your wreath and to paint outside.
Use thin, light coats, and make sure that you cover all of the wreath that will be seen.
I used one can of spray paint because I wanted it to have more of a bright green tint to it.
If you’d like an ultra bright green wreath, then spray more coats of paint until you get your desired look.
Let it dry completely.
Adding the Large Bow
I found the perfect red and white striped pre-made bow at Michaels, so I just used this instead of making my own.
It was huge and worked perfectly!
I used my fingers to fluff up all the loops, then twisted the attached wire to tie it to the bottom center of my Grinch Christmas wreath.
If you can’t find a pre-made bow you love, then try making your own with some thick ribbon and wire.
Creating the Ribbon Decorations
To add some bright colors and patterns to the wreath, I used some Christmas ribbon that I scored for 60% off.
I bought a handful of different patterns and styles that were a few inches thick to add variety.
To find the right length, cut a piece of ribbon, then tie a knot in the center.
Fold the piece in half lengthwise, then trim the ends so that the edges are longer.
See how long you would like your pieces to be, then cut a bunch of pieces that are same length in the different colors and patterns.
Knot all the ribbon pieces and trim all the ends.
Tuck the pieces into the wreath and use hot glue to hold them in place.
Aren’t they fun?!
They really add a lot to the Grinch wreath and create the perfect base for us to keep building on.
Adding the Embellishments
Next I used hot glue to attach a few holiday picks that looked like swirly peppermint candies.
If you can’t find these exact same decorations, that’s okay!
Just improvise and use similar items that you can find.
Then I hot glued some glittery curly wired pieces that looked whimsical and fun.
They remind me of those old-school curly bows that little girls used to wear.
Remember those? Maybe I just aged myself…
Next I glued down the glittered berries and mini ornaments.
Make sure that as you are gluing you are checking that the wreath is balanced.
You want to add some of the same types of decorations and colors throughout the whole wreath.
Try not to clump too many of the same things together.
When your DIY Grinch wreath looks nice and full, then it’s on to my favorite part!
Adding the Grinch
Our wreath just wouldn’t be complete without the Grinch, so I added a large smirking green Grinch face!
This was actually the easiest part of making the Grinch wreath, and the one that has the most impact.
I bought the perfect Grinch mask on Amazon for cheap, and then added the Grinch’s face to the center of the wreath.
First, I used scissors to cut off his extra hair that poked up on the mask.
Then, I just tucked the mask in the center of the wreath how I wanted it, then added little bits of hot glue to the sides to hold it securely in place.
Isn’t it FUN?!?
Now the Grinch wreath is completely finished and ready to hang.
I like to use a wreath door hanger and attach the wreath using the wire on the back of the wreath.
